The Librarian, a Forerunner, looked over humanity. Without the humans around, the Flood returned and went to war with the Forerunners. Losing the war, the Forerunners constructed and activated the titular Halo rings, which were designed to destroy all life that the Flood could potentially prey upon — starving the Flood, ensuring its demise. They worship the Forerunners and therefore the Halos.

Many generations after being punished by the Forerunners, the humans were back to traveling the galaxy and making colonies on lesser planets. But some of the colonies were unhappy with the politics of Earth. A minor insurrection against the UNSC began to build across several planets. So naturally, the UNSC started abducting children. Catherine Halsey led the program, and abducted gifted 6-year-olds for it. The Spartan-II cadets received training and, eventually, physical augmentations — which came with a rather low survival rate.

One of the first Spartan-IIs to graduate from the program and the first one Halsey met with as a 6-year-old was John, more often known by his number , or his rank: Master Chief.

Going forward, keep in this in mind: The Spartans were originally designed to quell a human civil war, not fight the Covenant. In the middle of the insurrection of the human colonies, the Covenant appeared and attacked Harvest, a human planet.

A high-ranking commander finds a Forerunner relic on Harvest, which is why the Covenant are there. The UNSC chase the Covenant through the galaxy and to the resting site of a dormant Forerunner fleet, which the humans prevent the Covenant from acquiring.

Halsey, so she can lead a ship called The Pillar of Autumn to a new Forerunner artifact. Noble Team helps beat the Covenant down as much as possible over the course of the game, and creates an opening for The Pillar of Autumn — which also contains Master Chief frozen in cryosleep. Noble Team eventually succeeds, but every member of the squad dies, and almost all of Reach is glassed by the Covenant.

After rescuing some crewmates, Chief and Cortana attempt to reach the control room. They find an infected Captain Keyes, kill him, and then blow up the crashed Pillar of Autumn to destroy Installation Halsey and a few Spartans who managed to survive the glassing. After foiling another Covenant plot, the duo return to Earth. Halo 2 starts at Earth, where Chief battles the Covenant in space and on the planet. The two primary Forerunners we know, the Didact and the Librarian, belonged to the Warrior-Servant and Lifeworker rates respectively.

If the Forerunners were to be said to have any religion, it was a belief in the Mantle of Responsibility. In Halo 4 , players can hear the Didact spout off a bunch of nonsense about this "Mantle. This Mantle was passed down to the Forerunners by their forebears, the Precursors.

Though as we'll later explain, the Forerunners' time keeping the Mantle was meant to be temporary. In Halo 5: Guardians , Cortana is brought back to life after she touches the Domain.

Though initially believed to be a Forerunner construction, the Domain actually comes from the Precursors. The exact nature of the Domain is unclear. All we know is that it is a "neurophysical" space that holds all information that the Precursors and Forerunners gathered during their lifetimes. Think of it as a nearly infinite, quantum search engine. It holds the records of basically everything, including the experiences of individuals. When Cortana accessed this thing, she was restored to "life.

The Forerunners' name implies that their civilization is meant to precede something. It's a name that is meant to be succeeded, if you know what we mean.

The Precursors, the species that created the Forerunners, intended humanity to be the civilization that would replace them. That's why, as we find out in later Halo games, humans are referred to as "Reclaimers. Forerunner firearms, like the rest of their technology, are highly sophisticated; most are composed of disparate parts held together by energy fields and display self-assembling capabilities.

At least some Forerunner weapons are designed to operate differently according to their wielder; for example, the Incineration Cannon known as the River of Light will only unlock its full capabilities in the right hands while reducing its destructive power when wielded by a Promethean Knight construct.

Forerunner architecture incorporates heavy use of geometric angles, usually at either extremely sharp degrees - Forerunner buildings are usually trapezoidal - or at forty-five degree angles. Most Forerunner architecture is constructed with a special type of silver-gray metal that resists deterioration, bullets, plasma bolts and fire, as made evident by Forerunner structures standing in pristine condition , - , years after they were built. However, their resistance to heavy plasma fire is limited; concentrated plasma discharge is capable of destroying some Forerunner architecture.

The Forerunners were also highly skilled at creating stone architecture. Typically, these buildings were built from a pale brown or tan stone. In addition to physical structures, a large portion of Forerunner architecture is actually composed of sophisticated hard light construction.

Such architecture is often crafted in the likeness of corporeal matter, most commonly gray Forerunner metal. Hard light structures can form complex shapes and in many cases, be entirely indistinguishable from physical construction, [] making it difficult to determine which structural components are made up of actual matter.

The immaterial and flexible nature of this technology lends it a great deal of uses, but as a drawback, it is susceptible to power failures; [] nonetheless, certain Forerunner ships, such as the command warship Mantle's Approach , employ hard light bonding as a means of maintaining the vessel's structural integrity.

Many symbols and patterns on Forerunner structures employ complex geometric shapes that appear to operate in dimensions higher than human understanding can comprehend. Even Sentinel drones possess small holographic Forerunner script around their "eyes".

The Forerunners were highly skilled at creating natural-looking habitats, such as those of the Halo installations, which tend to be very elaborate and include realistic weather patterns and self-sustaining biomes. Although they are clearly distinct from the natural landscape, Forerunner structures often appear to "grow" out of the surrounding terrain, resulting in an impression of complementing the landscape as opposed to replacing it.

While the Forerunners' architectural and technological prowess is legendary, their masterpieces also extended to the fields of stellar and planetary engineering. Shield World , a full-size Dyson shell , existed in slipstream space , where planets and stars cannot ordinarily exist. In addition, the slipspace bubble containing the enormous construct was enclosed within Onyx , a planet-sized structure composed of trillions of Sentinels arranged into a complex structural scaffolding and covered by a terrestrial crust.

The Forerunners also created many smaller shield worlds, essentially planet-sized Dyson shells with terrestrial inner and outer surfaces as well a miniaturized sun in the center. Some works of Forerunner engineering are also located beyond the confines of the galaxy, including Installation 00 , a vast, flower-shaped construct with a terrestrial surface and its own artificial star for illumination. Another example of the Forerunners' mastery of megascale engineering was the Capital , a structure which surpassed even the Ark in sheer enormity and complexity.

As the Librarian and the Didact are Forerunners, a more accurate description can be drawn from them. Forerunner customs required that they wear armor or combat skins at all times. Forerunner mutation to rates , also affected the characteristics of a Forerunner; these traits apparently range from increased height to an additional thumb on each hand.

Manipulars were juvenile Forerunners not yet mutated into a rate. Theoreticals were a rate of scientists that were dissolved after the Human-Forerunner war.

Counting the Theoreticals, there were a total of seven rates. The Forerunners appeared to be genetically related to the humans, possibly as they were both creations of the Precursors.

This can be corroborated by the Iris Server message about the humans providing "answers" to the Forerunner's own "mysteries," and Mendicant Bias's own declaration in Halo: Contact Harvest. This also explains why the Prophets ordered the Covenant to exterminate humanity, knowing that they are the Forerunner's designated heirs and would undermine their power.

The Halo rings themselves, the Micro-Dyson Mark II sphere, which is connected through a portal to the shield world Onyx and the Ark, are above all others, the most significant pieces of Forerunner technology. The planet Onyx in particular demonstrates both their ability for engineering on a grand scale, and their near transcendent grasp of slipspace technology. The Forerunners can also "devolve" a species back to a primitive state.

It is unknown how much of their technology is based on the technology of the Precursors, if any. Covenant Luminaries which are actually stolen Forerunner equipment designed to detect other Forerunner objects can detect Humans, previously mislabeled as "Forerunner Artifacts," leading to the initial Human-Covenant contact which sparked a seemingly endless war. The Forerunners have thus far created a species: the Huragok.

They are also known to have manipulated the genetics of other races such as the Thanolekgolo. Forerunner constructs and sentries use a broad variety of weapons, typically high-powered energy beams and hard light weapons.

These weapons proved to be very effective when battling the Flood, burning Flood forms to the point that they cannot be revived by their compatriots. The Forerunners have also proven to be able to merge beams together into one stream to amplify its power.

The Forerunners installed and constructed these intricate beam weapons inside their paradigm Arrays which allowed them to build an army of machines to battle the Flood without sending any Forerunner to the front lines. Forerunners evidently made active use of plasma weaponry as well; the Covenant's own weapons and technology are likely based on Forerunner artifacts.

The Sentinels wield orange-colored directed energy beams, used primarily for fighting the Flood. Sentinel Majors however, have a more powerful and accurate version of the beam, which sports superior energy output, at the cost of overheating issues. These more advanced energy beams are colored blue. All variants of these Sentinel Beams can be wielded by Humans and certain Covenant races. Meanwhile, Enforcers are equipped with multiple packs of small grenades, or mortar-like explosives launched over the top of their shield.

The Enforcer also boasts a pair of Pulse beams , which fire clusters of smaller red Needle-like projectiles or bolts of energy at an incredibly high rate of fire. These pulse beams are primarily used against infantry at close range.

These mammoth constructs also are capable of lifting heavy armored vehicles, using some sort of magnetic or anti-gravity grapple, before crushing the target between their massive 'arms'. The Constructors ' repair beam can also be considered a weapon, but with minimal damage output. The Sentinels of Onyx had significantly more powerful weaponry. They were described to be a sphere surrounded by three floating "booms" or small pieces of armor that possessed powerful energy shields which would suddenly "pop" into place in order to deflect objects moving at high velocities.

Their energy weapons are described as a single, slow-charging, golden beam that could melt straight through the SPI armor of the Spartan-IIIs. The Onyx Sentinels also have the ability to combine for different purposes, such as exponentially increasing their combat capabilities, or for large-scale excavation.

One formation of these combined Sentinels was able to easily destroy two Covenant destroyers. However, it should be noted that the second Covenant Destroyer was caught off guard after a Slipspace jump, and the first one had its energy shields down in a gesture of peace, trying to initiate contact with the Forerunner constructs.

The Forerunners also constructed Automated Turrets that fire blue beams similar to those of Sentinel Majors. These turrets themselves resemble stripped-down Sentinels, and hover in mid-air, tracking enemy targets, but are otherwise immobile. In Halo 3 , it seemed that even the Monitors had the ability to defend themselves against the Flood using a focused beam similar to the Sentinel's beam, but much more powerful.

The weapon was capable of draining the shields of a Spartan-II in one short-duration blast, and mortally wounding Sergeant Major Avery Johnson. It is also quite odd and puzzling as to why Penitent Tangent didn't use this ability against the Gravemind in Halo 2. It is assumed that the Gravemind is likely to have damaged Penitent Tangent when he captured the Monitor, disabling its beam weaponry.

It could simply be that it was not equipped with one, although this is highly unlikely due to the importance of the monitors to ensure the Halo installation's upkeep. Forerunners also wielded an as yet unnamed beam weapon.
